KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Trustees will be asked tonight to make changes to next year’s school curriculum, and one of the bigger changes is designed to address an alarming shortage of teachers.
The district already has high school courses and other activities that introduce students to the teaching profession. The proposal next year is to begin grooming future teachers earlier, in the middle schools, and to expand the coursework in the High Schools.
Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri says it will satisfy several goals set by the board, because “the Future Proud Educators courses closely align with the college and career theme of equity as part of KPS’s effort to grow our own teachers and increase the percentage of teachers of color.”
Raichoudhuri is also recommending upgrades to other core subject areas, and to have the course catalog be published digitally this time around.
She says it will save money, help the environment, and make it easier to update and change.
Trustees are expected to approve the changes tonight.
