SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of South Haven is getting ahead of the power curve in hiring seasonal staff ahead of their summer tourist season.
Officials with the city say they were looking to fill 35 part-time positions at their first ever seasonal job fair held on Saturday, February 26. And with it, came an increase in starting pay for the positions they were hiring for thanks to a $90,000 proposal to increase starting wages which was approved by the South Haven City Council at the beginning of the month.
“Those who are working on marinas are starting at $14 per hour,” Human Resources director for the city of South Haven Kim Wise told WWMT. “Those are usually high school kids. Those who are 18 and over working in our parks or bridge tenders, those positions are starting at $15 an hour now.”
South Haven Area Emergency Services, (SHAES), was another group looking to hire staff at Saturday’s job fair, specifically looking to fill more on-call firefighters positions.
City officials said to help offset some of the wage increase, it would reduce the budgeted number of parks and cemetery workers from ten to six seasonal workers.
