KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It may not qualify as an Olympic event, but two area groups are involved in the sport of chair volleyball, and having a great time doing it.
A local personal trainer organized the games between members of the Western Michigan University volleyball team and residents at the Fountains at Bronson Place.
80 year old Ken Dettloff, a certified personal trainer who works with several people who live at the senior community, says that both groups have taken the event seriously and that there is a healthy amount of trash talking that goes on.
The two teams were tied one match apiece going into the deciding event on Friday, February 17, and Dettloff mentioned that not only have the players gotten into the festivities, but the spectators have been vocal and supportive of all the players.
And the Fountains team claimed the win on Friday, winning all three games of the deciding match, and therefore claimed the unofficial title of Kalamazoo area chair volleyball champions.
