KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A combination of freezing rain, sleet, and snow forecast for the state today has caused most schools in the area to close and could affect driving both Wednesday and into Thursday morning.
An ice storm warning will be in effect for Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Allegan, Barry, Eaton, and Van Buren counties from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday until 4:00 a.m. Thursday for up to half an inch of ice accumulation.
A winter storm warning will be in effect for Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Muskegon, Montcalm, and Gratiot from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday until 4:00 a.m. Thursday for 1 to 3 inches of sleet or snow and up to 0.40 inches ice accumulation.
Forecasters say the greatest threat for significant freezing rain appears to be between I-96 and I-94. South of I-94, rain may eventually take over and melt some of the accumulation.
Most schools in Kalamazoo County and the surrounding area begin making their Wednesday announcements last night.
