PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage Parks & Recreation office is reminding those who come to parks with their dogs that they need to be on a leash at all times.
The reminder comes from the City of Portage as reports from concerned citizens and observations of dogs off leash by Park staff have increased over the past year. And city officials are reminding park users that under Michigan law (MCL. SEC. 287.262), it is unlawful “for any owner to allow any dog to stray unless properly leashed,” and that Portage Parks & Recreation has a rule in place requiring all dogs to be on a 6 foot or retractable leash in all parks.
They also reminding dog owners of their responsibility to pick up and properly dispose of dog waste within the parks as waste bag dispensers and disposal bins are located throughout the Portage parks and trails system.
And for those who want to let their four-legged friends wander off leash, the South Westnedge Dog Park at 9010 South Westnedge Avenue is open year-round.
