SCHOOLCRAFT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A man and woman who fled the scene of an accident Sunday which forced the cancellation of classes for School Community Schools Monday are facing multiple counts after being arrested by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to reports of a red Jeep driving erratically on East VW Avenue just after 3:00 p.m. They say the vehicle hit a tree and then drove off toward 16th Street.
Witnesses told police 35-year-old Erick R. Kibler and 32-year-old Miranda Paige Hagaman then fled their vehicle on foot into a cornfield. Those witnesses also told police that saw the pair retrieve a gun case from the Jeep, but it turned out to be a guitar case.
After deputies established a perimeter they learned the vehicle had been reported stolen in Portage. They apprehended Kibler and were later able to locate Hagaman. She faces two counts of Resisting and Obstructing, while he faces the Resisting and Obstructing charges, as well as Receiving and Concealing a Stolen Vehicle.
Kibler also had outstanding drug charge warrants.
Schoolcraft Community Schools announced on the night of the chase it would be closed the following day. The district’s elementary, middle and high schools are located near where the incident took place.
