KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Lakeside Academy’s former director has been sentenced to probation for her role in the death of a student lodged at the facility last year.
As of Monday, Heather McLogan will face 18 months of probation for a charge of felony third-degree child abuse.
The charge stems from the April 2020 death of 16-year-old Cornelius Fredricks, who was restrained in the facility cafeteria for throwing a sandwich.
He did not regain consciousness after passing out from the restraint, and two days later, passed away from cardiac arrest.
Although McLogan did not participate in the restraint, documents state that she should have ended the action. She entered a plea deal back in July, pleading no contest in the case.
As a result of the agreement, one felony charge of second-degree child abuse and involuntary manslaughter were dropped. A violation of the probation may result in 180 days in jail.
Per the terms of her agreement, she may be required to testify against the other former Lakeside employees charged in the case, Michael Mosley and Zachary Solis.
Both of those employees were the ones who actually restrained Fredricks, and are both charged with second-degree child abuse (two counts) and involuntary manslaughter.
They are both scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
