KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — For the first time in 16 years, Kalamazoo County residents will be able to apply for rent assistance through a state program.
The Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s Housing Choice Voucher Program is opening its wait list, which means that some who need help in paying their rent could be chosen for assistance.
The agency said that some have been on the waiting list since 2006. And because vacancies have come up, it was decided to re-open the list. It is expected that about 150 vacancies in Kalamazoo County will be filled.
Those who are chosen must pay about 30% of their rent, with the state providing the rest.
The MSHDA currently assists over 28,000 families with help.
