WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – Michigan’s Congressional Delegation is united in opposing a proposed Trump Administration cut in National Guard funding for the Great Lakes State.
Last week, the President directed that states pick up 25 percent of the cost for the nationwide deployment of the state militias in response to the COVID 19 outbreak, with the exceptions of Florida and Texas. Some say that this move is politically motivated, with those states important to Mr. Trump’s reelection efforts.
Democrat Debbie Dingell of Dearborn and Republican Fred Upton of St. Joseph co-authored the letter asking to extend federal funding for the National Guard through the end of calendar 2020 at a full 100 percent reimbursement rate for the state of Michigan.
“There’s no reason that we should be treated differently than other states, knowing that we have a full load of COVID,” Upton said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly appearance on Tuesday. “This protects our Guard, making sure that they have the right benefits.”
All but one of the 14 members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation signed the letter; Independent Justin Amash of Grand Rapids was the only omission.
