KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — After working tirelessly for the past nine months, residents of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA) Kirk Newman Art School (KNAS) are set to present the exhibition, Portal Theory, which is completely curated with their own works.
KIA officials say the community at large is welcome to view the exhibition and meet the artists on opening night, Friday, May 6 from 5 to 8 p.m., with free admission to all galleries.
Beginning in 2015, the intensive art study residency program was designed for aspiring artists who wanted to grow and strengthen their art practice in a supportive community, with access to professional studio facilities and mentorship from KNAS department heads.
Officials say this year’s exhibition showcases a variety of mediums including sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking by residents Jose Verlarde-Chan, Marissa Klee-Peregon, Brendan Barnes, Rebecca West, Alex Menzor, Ellen Vandermyde, and Yve Holtzclaw, and will be on view through June 5, 2022.
The KIA is open 11 a.m. -to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from 12 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
Artists interested in the residency program should apply by June 27, 2022. More information can be found at KIArts.org/kirk-newman-art-
