PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage fire officials are continuing their investigation into a fire Sunday morning that damaged a Portside Ave. home.
Authorities were called to the house at around 11:07 a.m., and discovered a shed at the location was on fire, and that the house was beginning to catch fire.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in around 10 minutes.
The shed and its contents were a total loss, and total damage done to both the shed and house was estimated at $15,000.
No injuries to civilians or first responders were reported.
A preliminary cause was determined to be improperly disposed-of ashes from a recreational fire.
A press release from the Portage Public Safety Department reminds residents to properly dispose of recreational fire materials by placing remaining wood, ash and embers into a metal container and dousing with water. The debris can then be safely disposed of after sitting for a few days.
