KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Organizers of a downtown greenspace project devoted to children are capping off 2022 with a fundraising effort they say will add an art and education pavilion.
“Since the Children’s Nature Playscape on Bronson Park opened its gates on July 15, more than 1,800 children and family members have enjoyed one of the nation’s largest natural playscapes in an urban core,” said Jody Brylinsky, chair of the Playscape’s planning committee.
“It’s been a thrill to see so many children gather and connect with nature right in the heart of our community,” Brylinsky said.
The committee is now kicking off the second phase of its capital campaign: $400,000 to finish the project, which will include completing the natural setting with additional materials and final landscaping with a native diversity of plants.
To start Phase 2, the committee is aiming to raise $40,000 by December 31 to add an art and education pavilion, which will provide a sheltered place for kids and staff to gather for art projects.
Phase 1 of the project cost $1.2 million with initial funding coming from First Congregational Church. Area foundations, nonprofit agencies and local donors provided additional support.
The Playscape team broke ground in March and opened to the public in July.
