BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One week after he became the first citizen elected Battle Creek Mayor, it was announced during Tuesday’s Battle Creek City Commission meeting that Mayor Mark Behnke had tested positive for COVID-19.
Vice Mayor Sherry Sofia said he was home recovering. She ran the virtual meeting while Behnke was absent.
Sofia said, ” I’m sure I’m not speaking out of school when I extend the thoughts and prayers of our commission.”
Behnke becomes the 36th Battle Creek city employee to test positive for the virus. He will have to remain in isolation for at least another week.
The Calhoun County Public Health Department reported 55 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday which brought the total since the pandemic began up to 3,819 cases. A total of 85 persons have died after testing positive for the virus.
Of the 217 persons who had to go to the hospital, 37 were in a Calhoun County medical care facility on Wednesday.
