KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Friday, June 2 is Gun Violence Awareness Day in Kalamazoo, Portage and the rest of the nation. And gun safety advocates say folks should wear orange if they want to show their support.
According to the nonprofit group, Gun Violence Archive, there have already been over 200 mass shootings so far this year in the U.S.
Marti Ulmer with Mom’s Demand Action says the prevalence of guns in the country puts everyone at risk.
She says the group is advocating what they say are the passage of sensible gun laws that keep guns out of the wrong hands with the first Friday in June being the national commemoration.
Ulmer says they plan to hold a Kalamazoo event to promote their cause next week on Monday at 5 p.m. in Bronson Park, with the City of Kalamazoo lighting up City Hall with orange lights to mark the occasion.
