PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage Public School District broke ground on a new elementary school at the beginning of this week.
Community members and students gathering at Haverhill Elementary School on Monday, June 5 to mark the occasion for the second school groundbreaking in two weeks for the district.
District officials say the new Haverhill school at 6633 Haverhill Avenue, is being constructed next to the current one at a cost of $36 million dollars.
The new school, which is expected to open in the fall of 2025, will be able to accommodate 600 students compared to the current number of 450 at the older building.
The district plans to replace five of it’s elementary schools through it’s “Building the Future of Learning” plan, which is partially funded by a $175 million bond that passed in 2021.
Officials say however that due to inflation over the last three years, they will have to chip in $91 million dollars more to replace the five schools that were built in the 1960s.
