KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo voters will cast a symbolic vote on November 7 to decide if they will have ranked choice in future elections if a bill is approved by state lawmakers. Ranked choice voting is not permitted in Michigan and the Senate bill would change that.
Volunteer coordinator Christina Dorett with Rank MI Vote Kalamazoo says the system would allow voters to rank candidates for mayor and city commission by preference, with no winner declared unless someone reaches 50-percent of the vote.
The ballot question before Kalamazoo voters has the language “when it is authorized by State Law.”
