KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo teacher has won a national award for his skills showing students how to compute.
Shannon Houtrouw has been teaching Discrete Math and Computer Science at the Kalamazoo Center for Math and Science for 20 years,
KAMSC director Heather Kortlandt says he has gotten the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science.
His students come out of class knowing how to code, making up their own programs, and they are able to do it well enough to compete in state and national coding competitions.
The honor comes with a $10,000 NSF grant. Each year up to 110 K-12 STEM teachers from across the country may be recognized by the White House.
