KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The community came out to if not defend, at least support a Kalamazoo Central High School junior varsity football player who seriously injured a player from Lakeshore High School on the 18th.
Video of the body slam has gone viral, seen by millions, and has triggered a wave of racial slurs and insults targeting the 15-year-old, the team and the school.
Community members told Kalamazoo Public School board it was a mistake made by a teen and it should not be allowed to ruin his life.
The father of the Kalamazoo Central student pleaded with the board not to expel the his son.
The Lakeshore football player suffered two broken vertebrae and is recovering at home, after hospital treatment.
Privacy laws prevent the release of names and specific details, especially when juveniles are involved, but superintendent Darrin Slade says they took appropriate measures.
Trustees Patti Sholler-Barber and Carol McGlinn denounced the racial hatred that has been aimed at the Kalamazoo teen and the district.
The varsity teams from the two schools played the next night, and the two teams met before the game to pray for the injured student.
