BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Battle Creek will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony next Wednesday, May 27 at 11:30 a.m. for a newly rehabilitated five-unit apartment building at 614 NE Capital Avenue.
The city used a combination of federal Community Development Block Grant funds and locally controlled national opioid settlement funds to transform the long-vacant property into recovery housing. The $862,000 rehabilitation included $533,734 in CDBG funding and $328,266.47 in opioid settlement funds.
Recovery Services Unlimited will own and operate the building as transitional housing for individuals recovering from opioid use disorder who need additional time to stabilize their sobriety and regain independence.
The city says the building, built in 1940, includes three one-bedroom apartments on the main floor, including one barrier-free accessible unit with a ramped entrance and in-unit washer and dryer. The second floor includes two two-bedroom apartments, and the basement provides a conference room and shared laundry space. Five detached garages offer storage or parking for each unit.
Recovery Services Unlimited was selected through a competitive request for proposals process last spring. They provide outpatient treatment, therapy, case management, peer recovery coaching and transitional housing, supporting long-term recovery and improved quality of life. The new building expands available recovery housing options in the community.
