KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It’s last call for a joint program between Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Valley Community College that taught students brewing.
Kalamazoo Valley Community College announced this week it will sunset its Sustainable Brewing program, citing continued low enrollment and declining conditions within the brewing industry. The college will no longer accept new students into the program but will continue to support all currently enrolled brewing program students through individualized plans for completion.
KVCC says the college’s general brewery operations, including the popular Taps on Tuesday community event, will continue. The program sunset affects the academic program only, not the college’s broader brewing facilities or community programming.
The school says since its launch in 2015, the Sustainable Brewing academic program has been a distinctive offering within Kalamazoo Valley’s career and technical education portfolio, with student-produced brews earning two Grand National Championships at the U.S. Open College Beer Championship, a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival and numerous additional gold, silver and bronze medals in national competitions.
Students currently pursuing the Brewing Certificate of Achievement (COA), Certificate (CERT) or BREW-track Occupational Technical Studies Associate of Applied Science will work directly with advisors and counselors to determine the best path to completion based on their individual progress, remaining coursework and career goals.
