KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board meets on Wednesday this week because of the primary election on Tuesday.
On their agenda is a request from administration to hold two special meetings this month to tackle pressing and complicated issues.
One is to take a deep dive into employee compensation and benefits and the growing popularity of the drug GLP-1, which is making it tougher to find money for raises and other perks.
Whether to continue providing access to the fat-fighting drug is just part of a much bigger conversation the board needs to have.
The other came up at last week’s budget retreat. Administration needs decisions on construction projects, and particularly the pressing need for upgrades at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Strebs says the jail is just one project they want to tackle. A new administration building and a new hazardous waste disposal facility and other projects are also on that list.
No dates for the special meetings have been set.
Administrators hope the board will schedule them at this week’s regular meeting.
