KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners will once again permit call-in comments during their regular meetings beginning in November.
The change in policy was adopted at the request of citizens who say it’s just too inconvenient to have to do it in person.
It’s a return to the practice that was permitted during the COVID-19 pandemic, when health and safety was an issue.
City Attorney Aaron Leal says the new policy language was crafted after debate by commissioners on how it would be reimplemented.
They will return to the way it was practiced during COVID-19.
Residents will be limited to three minutes during public comment time at the beginning of regular meetings. Comments will be taken from those in the chambers first, and then those who call in.
City Manager Malcolm Hankins says he will need a few weeks to make sure they have the technology and staff to make it happen, and that the public knows about the changes.
He says they should be ready for the November 2nd commission meeting.
