GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Democrat Jocelyn Benson and Republican John James met in Grand Rapids last night for their first debate in the race for Michigan governor.
James opened by saying he hates politics, but loves Michigan and said Democrats want to blame President Trump for the state’s issues.
He said Michigan’s poor ratings on the economy, education, and infrastructure show it’s not Trump’s fault.
Benson said her campaign has three pillars – increasing wages, ending corruption and driving down costs.
She also blamed James for supporting Trump’s import tariffs, which she says have cost families thousands of dollars since he enacted them in early 2025.
Benson says she will negotiate a deal between Michigan and Canada to shield goods from those costs.
