KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo community has never been better prepared to care for its homeless population as winter approaches, if and when it finally arrives.
So far the weather hasn’t been a problem, and forecasters say an El Nino will probably make it a milder than normal winter season.
Jen Hsu-Bishop with the United Way of South-West Michigan says they are better funded this year, expanding the two largest shelters in the city, with contracts that begin today, November 2nd, and run through the end of March.
“Including Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, day and overnight shelter focused on single adults. as well as Ministry with Community day and overnight shelter for single adults with pets allowed through winter shelter projects.”
They have also contracted to have more beds and cots available under contract.
“So we continue to bring out the ability to shelter more individuals and to make sure that we have the infrastructure and resources to do that.”
Housing Resources Incorporated will be operating a 24-hour phone line to help the homeless find a bed.
Bishop says it truly is a community effort.
“Really approaching this as a joint effort with both the government, nonprofit as well as other investors, to make this possible.”
About $800,000 has been budgeted for this season’s winter shelter solutions effort.
