KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – While the homicide rate is down nationwide, and concerted efforts have been made to lower the rate even more in Kalamazoo, anti-gun violence groups say there are still too many.
The first Friday in June is Gun Violence Awareness Day, and advocates are urging people to wear orange today to show their opposition to the killings, and support for legislation and community efforts to reduce the occurrence of such crimes.
Rick Omillian with Moms Demand Action says they are glad to see the community support, but the job isn’t done yet.
While Kalamazoo has seen a sharp decline in youth related gun violence, reports out this week show a dramatic increase in domestic abuse related deaths and injuries, due partly to increased economic stress.
