TEXAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Another Kalamazoo County governmental body has spoken out against the possibility of data centers in their area.
The Texas Township Board passed Resolution 26-12 at its meeting this week, enacting a temporary moratorium on data center developments, which include facilities housing information technology infrastructure for digital data storage, including artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency mining.
Township officials say the moratorium will remain in effect for 12 months following its effective date of July 5, 2026, or until new zoning regulations are officially enacted.
They say the pause will allow their Planning Commission to evaluate data center land use impacts on farmland preservation, rural zoning compatibility, infrastructure capacity such as the electrical grid and water supply, and environmental factors like noise, heat discharge, and light pollution.
The vote is described as the culmination of a process that began with joint Planning Commission and Board discussions last year.
Oshtemo and Pavilion townships, and the city of Portage have adopted temporary moratoriums while they study data center and battery storage proposals and review zoning rules. Kalamazoo County hosted a panel discussion on data centers and battery storage facilities at Kalamazoo Valley Community College Thursday.
