KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – During a 12-hour period spanning the evening of July 4 into the morning of July 5 the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to eight separate fires throughout the city.
While investigations into the causes of these fires are ongoing, KDPS says preliminary findings indicate that fireworks may have contributed to three or more of the incidents.
During that 12-hour period, KDPS personnel responded to a detached garage fire in the 900 block of Sheridan Drive at 10:00 p.m., followed by a residential structure fire with
flames showing in the 1000 block of James Street at 10:15 p.m.
Crews were then dispatched to an exterior porch fire in the 700 block of North Park Street at 11:00 p.m.
Other overnight incidents included a dumpster fire in the 1300 block of Foxridge Drive at 12:15 a.m., a firework discharged inside of a residence in the 500 block of Vernon Avenue at 12:30 a.m., and a dumpster fire in the 2800 block of Heatherdowns Lane at 1:00 a.m.
At 1:30 a.m. officers responded to the 1300 block of Jefferson Avenue for a trash can on fire that extended to the roof of the home and ultimately into the attic.
KDPS says the final significant
incident occurred at 7:15 a.m. Sunday when officers responded to a water flow alarm at a business in the 3400 block of Covington Road and discovered an active fire inside the
structure.
At this time, no civilian or fire personnel injuries have been
reported.
