KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Absentee voting has become the most popular way to cast a ballot in Michigan, probably because it’s so convenient, but it is a lot of work for election crews.
Early voting is already underway in Michigan’s August primary.
Kalamazoo Mayor Dave Anderson says it would help local clerks and election officials if you don’t wait until early August, or Election Day, to fill them out and send them back.
Clerks have had to expand staff and add volunteers to meet the requirements of voter approved election reforms that have expanded voter options and access.
Anderson says election officials are already very busy on voting day, the arrival of late ballots just gives them more to do.
New state rules permit clerks to process absentee ballots before Election Day, open envelopes, verify voter rolls and prepare them to be counted.
They still must wait until Election Day to count them, but getting them ready ahead of time speeds up the results.
