KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Voters in Kalamazoo County are saying yes to establishing a childcare and early learning millage.
They approved the millage Tuesday, 63% to 37%, to provide funding for families with children up to five-years-old for childcare.
Advocates of the millage like Jen Stroven say just one in every four families in the county can afford childcare right now.
She also says Kalamazoo County is a childcare desert.
The half-mill will be for eight years.
It will raise just over $6.3-million in its first year based on current taxable value.
It would cost the typical homeowner between $50 and $100 per year, depending on the value of their home.
The millage will start in 2027 and run through 2034.
