KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners got an earful last night from residents who disagreed with public safety’s decision to clear the homeless encampment on North Edwards Street last Thursday.
The homeless were given 72 hours to vacate the vacant lot, and those that didn’t were removed.
Ministry with Community was on hand to help.
Speakers last night were highly critical of the decision.
Public comments on this event and Flock cameras were at times rude, profane and even threatening, and went on for two-and-a-half hours.
The KDPS Community Services Team presented information to the homeless on available services during the police operation.
Commissioner Alonzo Wilson, who saw the process first hand, says the community needs to establish a no-barriers shelter so homeless residents like this have an alternative, and a storage facility so the possessions of the homeless are not just thrown out.
Commissioner Jeanne Hess reminded everyone that a wide community discussion on housing is coming up on September 10th with all the major players in attendance.
Commissioner Jae Slaby proposed a city task force made up of staff members to help the homeless.
Vice Mayor Drew Duncan says he is in contact with homeless officials in Lansing and Grand Rapids to create a regional task force on homelessness issues.
No tickets were issued and no one was arrested Thursday.
The police action followed complaints from Northside neighborhood residents and officials that the encampment was blocking traffic and sidewalks in violation of city code.
