LEIGHTON TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A passenger in a vehicle that ran off the road early Monday morning in Allegan County’s Leighton Township is dead and the driver of the SUV is under arrest for drunk driving.
Around 2:10 a.m. Allegan County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the report of a single vehicle crash on 146th Avenue at the intersection of West Shore Drive. They say deputies arrived on scene and located a male passenger not breathing. Life saving measures were attempted by first responders however were unsuccessful. The male driver in the incident was uninjured.
Their preliminary investigation shows the SUV was traveling eastbound on 146th Avenue and lost control when attempting to negotiate the curve southbound onto West Shore Drive.
The Sheriff’s Office says alcohol, speed, and seatbelt usage were all factors in the crash. The driver was placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated causing death.
The drivers name is being withheld pending arraignment in the 57th District Court of Allegan.
The deceased passenger’s name is not being released at this time until next of kin notification is made.
